How to Install Dishwasher Electrics

In some cases, the dishwasher will simply come with a plug attached. As you might imagine, things become much easier in this situation - just plug the dishwasher into the nearest socket. If, however, there is no plug with the dishwasher, things are a bit more complicated. This guide will show you how to connect the electric wire to your new dishwasher.

First things first - double check the electricity for your wire is turned off. To test the electricity is off, use a multimeter. If you do not own a multimeter, it may be worth investing in one, they normally sell for around £15, and can prove invaluable when doing jobs around the house like this.

Place one of the multimeter prongs on the neutral (blue) wire, and the other prong on the live (brown) wire, being careful not to touch either wire with your hands. If the electric is off the multimeter should show no movement. If the electric is on, the needle will flicker around the 230-240V mark.

Note: If, for some reason, you are installing an old dishwasher (more than 5 years old), the wire colours may be different as wiring regulations have changed in the not too distant past.

Once you are happy the electricity is off, you need to find the junction box on the dishwasher - it will be at the bottom of the dishwasher, and it will have a thick wire coming out of it (which connects it to the rest of the dishwasher. Remove the front panel of this box (you'll need a screwdriver). Connect up the live (brown) and neutral (blue) wires in the junction box. The earth (green/yellow) wire should just connect to the casing of the junction box. Screw the front panel of the junction box back on, and you're finished with the electrics.
