How to Install a Dishwasher

The normal option when you buy a dishwasher is to pay for installation (or this may be included in the price). However, if you want to save some money or fancy a bit of a challenge, you can install the dishwasher yourself. In fact, installing a dishwasher is surprisingly straightforward.

If you have already have an old dishwasher than needs removing, follow our guide on how to remove a dishwasher.

Installing the new dishwasher

Installing a dishwasher is relatively easy, but be prepared - it is not as simple as pushing it into place and plugging it into the mains.

Before starting, the water should be turned off at the shutoff valve (this should be beneath the sink) - you can test that the water is off by turning the taps on the kitchen sink to see if any water comes out.

More importantly, you need to make sure the electricity is off, this can be done at the nearest circuit breaker. Again, it's worth testing the electricity is off - use a multimeter or electric screwdriver to make sure.

The bulk of the work is about connecting the following:

  1. Water Line
  2. Electricity
  3. Drain Outlet

This guide will take you through each of these items - just click on the links above.

Once those 3 steps are complete, the job is 95% complete, all that's left is to screw the dishwasher into place so that it won't rattle around. There should be screw holes where the dishwasher joins the underneath of the kitchen work surface. Use screws to attach the the dishwasher into place. Make sure any kitchen panels that you removed are put into place, clean up the kitchen, and put the water and electrics back on, and you are ready for your first wash!
